Gel Knee Injections

What are Gel Knee Injections?
A gel knee injection is an injection given directly into the joint to help reduce the pain in a knee affected by osteoarthritis, increasing mobility, and allowing more activity.

How is a knee injection performed?
Normal joint fluid containing hyaluronan is injected into the joint. This fluid acts like a shock absorber and lubricant in your joint and is needed to help the joint work properly. Hyaluronan is highly viscous, allowing the cartilage surfaces of the bones to glide upon each other smoothly. This leads to decreased symptoms of osteoarthritis.

Why are knee injections performed?
Knee injections are for people with knee osteoarthritis who have not received enough pain relief from diet, exercise, and over-the-counter pain medication.

How long does the procedure take?
The injection takes just a few minutes and is done on an outpatient basis.
